I was looking for some stair lights for our double story house. As there was no easy way to install conventional lights and wanting it to look good I started to do some research on how it is done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-1\"><span class=\"C-5\">I wanted to stay in the 12 v circuit and use strip lighting, with motion detectors to trigger the light strip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-1\"><span class=\"C-5\">The 3 main parts that you will require are:<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B06Y15YVFN\/ref=as_li_ss_il?psc=1&amp;linkCode=li3&amp;tag=picture0c-20&amp;linkId=915e9e6591e142480e9ff93362e8db58\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;ASIN=B06Y15YVFN&amp;Format=_SL250_&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=picture0c-20\" alt=\"light strip that change with music beats\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">These special light strips change color with the beat of the music, very cool.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"Body-Text-2 P-2\"><span class=\"C-5\">Weatherproof led strip lights. I bought mine in white color in 5-meter rolls. From <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2kI61zA\">Amazon<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"Body-Text-2 P-2\"><span class=\"C-5\">Led stair light controller from <a class=\"C-6\" href=\"http:\/\/bagram.lh.pl\/sklep\/?33,sterownik-oswietlenia-schodow-mono-stx-1792\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bagram<\/a>\u00a0STX-1792<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"Body-Text-2 P-2\"><span class=\"C-5\">Motion detector from eBay tdl5001 but you can use any motion detector in a 12v circuit that suits your d\u00e9cor.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"Body-Text-2 C-8\">Testing:<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"Body-Text-2 C-8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/notsealed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/wp38da7087_05_06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-25 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/notsealed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/wp38da7087_05_06-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Stair lighting\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-1\"><span class=\"C-5\">You first want to test your LED strip lighting to make sure it all glows well without any dead LEDs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-1\"><span class=\"C-5\">This is easily done by hooking up to 12v directly onto your LED strip.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"C-5\">You will then need to cut your led strip to size. You can only cut in designated spots on your strip lighting, this is often marked and usually comprises 3 LED in a row.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-1\"><span class=\"C-5\">Led strip lighting should come with 3m double-sided tape to enable the LEDs to be stuck down. Sometimes a really cheap tape will be supplied so I have used silicone to glue the strip in place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-1\"><span class=\"C-5\">If you are doing the step lighting for your stairs you can stick the LED strips to each step on the lip if there is one. If there is no lip on your steps you may have to have a look at other options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 C-8\">Video of stair lighting patterns.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"x-dS993P0fQ\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stairs lighting MONO Illumination Controller STX-1792 and STX-1794\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x-dS993P0fQ?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 C-9\">Thanks to Bagram Polska<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"Body-Text-2 P-5\"><span class=\"C-14\">Routing Hand Rails:<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-4\"><span class=\"C-13\">For the handrails, I took them off and cut out an 8mm wide 4mm deep slot with a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2kdB6O2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">wood router<\/a> the whole length of the handrail, and stuck the LED strip into it for a more flush seamless job. Some LED strip lighting will have the sticky tape on the end to stick them down. If yours doesn&#8217;t you can use some silicone glue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span class=\"C-13\">You may have to measure your light strip to get its dimensions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"Body-Text-2 P-5\"><span class=\"C-14\">Motion Detectors:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-24 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/notsealed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/motion.jpg\" alt=\"stair lighting motion\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/notsealed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/motion.jpg 250w, https:\/\/notsealed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/motion-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-4\"><em><span class=\"C-13\">The motion detector is an infra red type motion detector, (tdl 5001) I needed 2 of them to trigger the stair lights from someone walking at either end of the stairs up or down at night.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-4\"><span class=\"C-13\">These need to be wired up to the inputs of the controller.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"C-13\">PDF of the wiring\u00a0diagram can be found <a class=\"C-15\" href=\"http:\/\/bagram.pl\/stx-1792en.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-4\"><span class=\"C-13\">Please note that all inputs to the controller are negative &#8211; and all strip lighting will have common positives +.\u00a0<\/span>You may need to play with the delay on the motion detectors to determine how long your stair lighting will remain on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-4\"><span class=\"C-13\">There are cheaper stair controllers on the market. Most of them don&#8217;t have the current output required to drive a long strip on led lighting or require an extra module to drive led strips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body-Text-2 P-4\"><span class=\"C-13\">This controller can output a max of 5 amps and control 20 steps or 18 step and 2 handrails.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"C-13\">Remember to get a 12-volt power supply amp rating that is rated for the amount of led lights you have.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"title\" class=\"a-size-large a-spacing-none\"><span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\">Sensky BS010l Dc12v to 24v Mini Pir Motion Sensor Switch<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Sensky is an updated version to the 5001. This can be a slightly more expensive option depending on what you need to buy. If you already have the <a href=\"https:\/\/notsealed.com\/philips-hue-3rd-generation-starter-kit-review-best-smart-led-lighting.html\">Philips Hue ecosystem<\/a>\u00a0like the\u00a0<span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\">Philips 464495 Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 Starter Kit\u00a0<\/span>3rd Gen, then your cost will be very minimal and cheap.<\/p>\n<p>To really show off your Philips Hue get a Google Home to voice control your lights read up about it <a href=\"https:\/\/notsealed.com\/hey-google-home-voice-commands-easter-eggs.html\">here\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Smart Philips Hue Stair Lights Items<\/h2>\n<p>So you will need the following items to illuminate your stairs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 or 2 (1st Gen)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hyc4tB\">Philips Hue Lightstrips Gen1,<\/a>\u00a0becoming obsolete. <a href=\"https:\/\/notsealed.com\/philips-hue-light-strip-hack-using-5050-rgb.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1050 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/notsealed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_20170107_202007-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"stair color lights motion activated\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>If you want richer colors and more length try the <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gFZhDE\">Gen 2 Philips Hue Striplights<\/a>. Its nearly double the price as its a new product, but the 1st Gen works fine.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hym5XN\">Philips Hue Bridge 2.0<\/a>, best to get the hub in a kit as its cheaper.<\/li>\n<li>Philips Hue <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gFPXQn\">Motion Detector<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To install the Philips Hue Lightstrip system, all you need to do is attach the strip lights to the underside of handrails, or stair ledges and plug into a power outlet. Then use the Philips Hue App for Apple IOS or Android, and add in the LightStrip and motion detector.<\/p>\n<p>Once this has been done, as soon as someone walks past the motion detector the programmed color and brightness will happen. <em>MAGIC!<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Aftermarket Light strips for use with Philips Hue<\/h2>\n<p class=\"a-size-large a-spacing-none\"><span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\">Lots of people have been having success with using cheaper lights strips, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hnzyB1\">Wireless electronic ballast<\/a> FLS-PP lp with Power PWM interface for RGBW and RGB lights (12\/24V LED\/LED stripes).<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"a-vertical a-spacing-none\">\n<li><span class=\"a-list-item\">Suitable for 12 and 24V RGB and RGBW luminaries (but controlled on different channels) with a maximum output current of 6A (max. 72W@12V and 144W@24V)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"a-list-item\">Supports all features like on\/off, dimming, color tone adjustment, adjustable white, grouping lighting, saving, and using predefined scenes. All that Hue offers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"a-size-large a-spacing-none\"><span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\">It is a ZigBee certified product and can connect to your Hue 2.0 Base Station. Some earlier models had firmware issues but it has been rectified now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"a-size-large a-spacing-none\">Philips Hue is expensive to start off with, but build up slowly and keep an eye on Amazon sometimes their globes go on sale. You could always buy the Philips Hue Kit and sell off the Hue Hub 2 base station. Many people by these to upgrade from the old Hue 1.0 base station.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"a-size-large a-spacing-none\">Philips Hue Lightstrip Hack Mod<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Start with the Philip Hue Version 1 Light Strip and remove the led strip light using a soldering iron.<\/li>\n<li>Buy some small 4 amp per channel Led <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hMVfXT\">Hitlights Amplifiers<\/a> RGB they are only a few dollars each.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Get yourself 5m of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2TiLpSN\">5050<\/a> \u00a0<em><span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\">SUPERNIGHT 16.4 Flexible RGBW \u00a0Outdoor Strip LEDs,\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\">and plug them into the amplifier.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Wire in the amplifier into a 12v power supply. Make sure of its amp and power rating is above 3 amps. Wire the amp into the Philips Hue control board.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Depending on the type and quality of the RGB amplifier you may have difficulties dimming the Led Light Strips. Color changing will be fine. The clip below is using the larger amplifier but its all the same.
