Tips and Tricks

No, they are not. The newer Dyson V7, V8, V10, and V11 all use a different attachment system from the Dyson V6. We learned this the hard way by upgrading to the Dyson Motorhead V7 Origin and not being able to use any of our older attachments.

Why Dyson has changed the connection system is a mystery to me. All I can see is the new attachments each have the spring clips molded into each fitting rather than the cordless vacuum. The old system worked well and I did not have any issues.

There is the option of using a V6-V7 adaptor so don’t throw out your old attachments just yet. I must admit the new Dyson V7 attachments do connect together easily apart from the tiniest wobble in the connection points.

To be able to use our older Dyson V6 attachments with the V7 we had to buy a V6 to V7 Adapter. These are fairly cheap and lets you use your expensive attachments like the V6 tangle-free turbine tool which is great for cleaning dog hair from our car seats.

This attachment converter is designed to be compatible with Dyson vacuum cleaners, such as the V15, V11, V10, V8, V7, and V6.

There is no loss of suction and the connection is very sturdy by using this converter piece. It came with a free nozzle piece that lets you use standard vacuum connection parts that just push on as long as they are between 30-34mm. So most of us will have old Hoover vacuum hoses and tools lying around that are just push-on. This tool makes them fit your handstick.

One tool can now make 100s of old attachments fit your cordless vacuum cleaner.

Let’s look at the size difference. Dyson V6 attachments have an outside diameter of 34mm and have a half-moon raised bump stop that looks like the letter E. This prevents the attachment tool from rotating in the holder. This

Dyson V7 attachments on the other hand have an outside diameter of 34.6mm and different locking pins compared to the Dyson V6 attachments.

A Dyson V6 attachment will physically fit into the Dyson V7 but it will not lock into place. Sure you could tape it into position in an emergency but it is best to buy the V6-V7 converter.

The Dyson V7 attachments will not physically fit into a V6 cordless vacuum due to the locking pins on each side.

Are Dyson V6 and V8 attachments interchangeable?

"Are

No, unless you purchase a Dyson V6 to V7 adapter. With the newer cordless vacuums, the attachment accessories are different. They physically cannot connect to a different vacuum cleaner. Dyson V7, V8, V10, and V11 attachments are interchangeable with each other.

Are Dyson V6 and V7 batteries the same?

"Are

No, they are not. They use a different electrical connection system. Even though the batteries look similar you cannot fit a Dyson V6 battery into a V7 cordless handstick or vice versa.

After 3 years of running our Dyson V6, we had to finally replace the battery. We got the dreaded Dyson blinking red light 32 times and the battery would not charge.

A quick battery replacement with a cheaper aftermarket one fixed our issue and the cordless vacuum was back in operation.

You can read more about our Dyson V7 battery upgrade replacement here.

Dyson V6 battery is compatible with:

DC59
Dyson V6

Rated Power (Watts)
46

Battery Type | Voltage
21.6V

Weight (kgs/grams)
0.5kg

Now the Dyson V7 battery on the other hand is very similar apart from the shape of the V6. It is a 6-cell Lithium-Ion Battery Pack wired in series to provide 21.6 V, 16.2 A to the V7 cordless vacuum. (2100 mAh, 46 Wh)

So we have a new attachment system between the V7 and the V6 but the same rated power battery. To get a longer run time Dyson slows down the suction power which is evident in the sound of each cordless vac. Now don’t get me wrong they are both great vacuums for the price but if you want to use your old V6 attachments you will need an adapter.
