Rinnai Water Heater Not Working After Flush/Descaling In-use light not on

Rinnai Water Heater Not Working After Flush/Descaling In-use light not on
Remove the two screws holding the water filer connection in place to expose the pinwheel

This is a problem that is starting to come up after people are flushing their hot water system without a water filter in place. There is a little flywheel/pinwheel mechanism that detects the hot water flow so that the gas can be fired up.

Sometimes this gets stuck or clogged up and will require a service technician to come out. But it can be fixed yourself with some needle nose pliers or a can of compressed air.

Turn off the water supply and remove the two screws to the filter housing. Use needle-nose pliers to pull down the black cylinder pinwheel. Make sure it is spinning freely. Replace the water filter unit.

The following video explains it well.

Conclusion

I have worked on many Rinnai and Bosch tankless hot water systems over the last 20 years. Often it is an easy fix due to water ingress or a worn-out cable or sensor.

I find that most of the time a good flush out will fix a lot of the heating issues. Scale build-up will cause your gas heater to run hotter to try and achieve the correct temperature setting.

So don’t get a new hot water system just flush it out if the hot water system has an over or under-temperature warning. Do the flush every 2 years and you will have no issues.
