How to Reset the Check Engine Light on a Motorcycle

Now there are many different brands of motorcycles on the market. As they get smarter many will start to show error codes when something goes wrong. The engine check light is often used to notify the owner that there is an issue on the motorcycle.

In this post, we will show you how to reset the check engine light on most motorcycles.

Often disconnecting the battery for a few minutes will reset most engine check light fault codes. But they will come back again if the problem is not rectified.

Using an OBD2 scanner and adaptor cable for your motorcycle will often diagnose the fault and reset the code.

The good old piece of duct tape over the engine fault code light also hides the problem. (Just kidding)

To reset fault codes without disconnecting the battery check the following procedures.

Reset Kawasaki Engine Check Light

Reset Kawasaki fault codes

Now for this, you will require a 6-pin ODB2 cable converter for Kawasaki and an OBD2 reader. Either Bluetooth or a standalone unit will be fine.

Connect the OBD2 scanner and turn on the motorcycle. Read any fault codes and rectify them. Press clear/erase codes to clear from memory. Turn off the motorcycle unplug the OBD2 and congratulations the engine check light error code is gone.

If you do not have access to an OBD2 scanner and cable you can try the following fault code reset procedure. This procedure is listed in the workshop manual. Do not miss any steps.

1. Start the Kawasaki motorcycle and let it idle for a least 30 seconds before riding the bike.

2. Ride the motorcycle for more than 10 minutes from when you first started it. <ale sure that 5 of the 10 minutes must be at more than 40km/h speed continuously.

3. Turn off the motorcycle by turning the key off, then repeat the process twice more until you have done three cycles. (Do not turn the motorcycle off using the red off switch)

4. Turn the key off, and when you turn it back on for the fourth time, you should be clear.

Reset the Kawasaki Service light

Reset Kawasaki fault codes

Turn on the motorcycle press and hold the “Select” or “Mode” button to get into the settings. Scroll down to “Service” and select it. Then select “Oil Change“ it should be set to “On”. You can use the “Up/Down Mode” buttons to turn it off.

You can also leave it “On” and input the number of miles you want it to remind you to do an oil change. This will reset the service reminder.

The TEXA diagnostic tool and though it is not cheap it can reset fault codes and service reminders for most Kawasaki motorcycles.

Reset Harley Davidson Check Engine Light

Reset Harley Davidson Check Engine Light

This is a quick process on how to check and reset your check engine light on a Harley Davidson.

You can always use an OBD2 Diagnostic Adapter Compatible with Harley Davidson Fuel Injected Models this has a 6-Pin Connector for CAN-Bus Protocol.

If you don’t have an OBD2 scanner then you can do it the manual way. Now from the bike in the off position you’re going to need to hold down your trip button and then you need to turn the ignition on.

Once the motorcycle is on you will see it goes into diagnostics mode. You’re going to need to press your trip button once that’s going to let you know if you have any ECM or BCM error codes.

Once you detect the error code section you will need to press and hold the trip button for two seconds. This will bring up the code value number. Once the fault has been rectified you can then reset the error code.

You will need to press and hold this trip button until it says clear to reset the fault.

How to Reset the Yamaha Motorcycle engine check light

MT07 Yamaha fault code list dash

Just like many other motorcycle brands, there are lots of models and different dash buttons to consider with Yamaha motorcycles.

If you have an engine malfunction indicator light on say a 2007 Yamaha fz6 the reset procedure will be different to a newer model Yamaha MT07 engine check light reset.

With motorcycles that don’t have an OBD2 port, you will need to use the diagnostic menu to show you how to erase the history.

mt07 obd2 scanner 4 pin cable

To get into the diagnostic mode you have to set your on/off/run switch set to run and have your key in the off position. When you turn on the key you will need to hold the reset and select button until the screen changes. Wait until you see di, d1, or diag. Now press and hold the reset select for two seconds again to select diagnostic mode.  You can now turn your switch back to the off position.

This will enable you to scroll through all of the settings.

Code d:62 tells you the number of fault codes or malfunctions the motorcycle has detected in its lifetime. Code d:63 tells you if there are any codes being stored right now. If it is showing 00 then there are no faults. To reset the number of fault codes head back to d:62 and flip the off switch to on. This will reset the number back to 0 (zero) and the engine check light will go away. You have now erased the fault codes.

Turn the key back to off and when you turn it on again you will be out of diagnostic mode.

The full list of Yamaha motorcycle fault codes found here.

Conclusion

If your motorcycle is only a few years old chances are that is has an OBD2 port. This will enable checking engine fault codes and resetting them with ease using an OBD2 scanner and an adapter cable suited for your motorcycle.

Don’t forget to fix the fault before clearing the error code other wise the check engine light will come up again.

Let me know in the comments if you have any issues resetting your motorcycle error codes and I will try to help. Good luck and ride safe.
